A twist on the traditional ballerina or princess party, the Swan Lake party lets your little princess shine, while involving all her friends, both boys and girls.

Invitations

Send a message in a bottle. Fill a bottle with sequins, white feathers and a plastic swan. Tape an invitation to the outside of the bottle and hand deliver.

Invitations might read something like:

Swan Princess Madeline Lynn/requests the presence of all/princes and princesses, kings and queens/at her sixth birthday celebration/Saturday, April 28 at 10 p.m./62 Windy Dr. Windy City, IL 95000/RSVP Sandy Johnston 955-555-0000

Costumes

Buy or make a white tutu for the birthday girl and blue tutus for all her princess friends. Tie a white feathered boa around the birthday girl’s waist. Place a feather clip in her hair and wings on her back and she’s set (note the wings in the link only have feathers on one side of the wings, and the wings are made of cardboard – still they’re cute and very swany.) For a crowning touch, crown all the princes and princesses with paper or plastic crowns and tiaras.

Decorations
Hang blue streamers on the ceiling and blue pictures of fish and other lake creatures. Cover the party table in a white tablecloth and use blue party plates, cups and utensils. Or, alternately, use a blue tablecloth and white party plates, cups and utensils. If the party is outdoors, set up a bubble machine for the kids to run and twirl in.

Background noise: Play a Swan Lake movie or music.

Crafts & Activities

Swan Craft: Cut out swan and people shapes. Provide glue, googly eyes, yarn for hair, markers or crayons, feathers, and tulle for the children to make their own swan princesses and princes.

Treasure Hunt: Hide a treasure chest full of plastic pearl necklaces, jewels and candies. Leave messages around the house or yard leading them to the treasure. For young children, hide photographs instead of messages to lead them to the treasure.

Treats
Rent or buy a chocolate fountain and use white chocolate for dipping strawberries, marshmallows, crinkle chips and pretzel sticks.

Fill plastic swans with candies and serve on a tray.
Make or buy and water-themed cake and place a plastic swan on top or a swan cake topper.
